The World Food Prize Foundation's George Washington Carver Internship is an unparalleled professional opportunity for students interested in global issues of hunger, poverty, and development.
George Washington Carver (GWC) Interns learn first-hand both the public and private side of operating an international non-profit organization and increase their understanding of the international fight against hunger, malnutrition, and poverty.
Working one-on-one with a staff mentor, GWC Interns become an integral part of this internationally renowned organization and interact with World Food Prize Laureates, government officials, international experts in science and agriculture, leaders in industry and business, and members of local and national media. GWC Interns come from a variety of academic disciplines and internship roles will be specialized according to an individual’s background, skills, and area of interest.
– About the Prize
The World Food Prize is the foremost international honor recognizing — without regard to race, religion, nationality, or political beliefs — the achievements of individuals who have advanced human development by improving the quality, quantity or availability of food in the world.
The $250,000 annual award recognizes contributions in any field involved in the world food supply including, but not limited to: plant, animal and soil science; food science and technology; nutrition; rural development; marketing; food processing and packaging; water and the environment; natural resource conservation; physical infrastructure; transportation, storage and distribution; special or extraordinary feeding programs; social organization and poverty elimination; economics and finance; policy analysis; and public advocacy.
The World Food Prize emphasizes the importance of a nutritious and sustainable food supply for all people. By honoring those who have worked successfully toward this goal, The Prize calls attention to what has been done to improve global food security and to what can be accomplished in the future.
– Description of Ideal Candidate:
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Successful candidates have: a strong academic background, a solid work ethic, a capacity for analytical thinking, impeccable attention to detail and excellent oral and written communication skills. They are enthusiastic and flexible learners, capable of both taking direction and working independently. All selected interns share a commitment to fulfilling The World Food Prize Foundation’s purpose of inspiring and recognizing contributions to human development through increasing the quality, quantity, and availability of food in the world.
While a minimum commitment of 12 hours per week in the hours between 9-5pm Monday through Friday is required, the program provides flexibility for each intern’s schedule, and some interns choose to work full time. While start and end dates are also flexible, a minimum commitment of three months is required. Interns are unpaid but may be eligible for course credit. A cover letter, resume, and sample of work (if applying for graphic design) are necessary to apply. Please note that individuals selected for the internship are subject to a background check.

- This internship is based in Des Moines, Iowa, and the program has been adapted to accommodate a virtual or in-person experience, in some cases. Interns are compensated with a stipend of $1,500 per internship period.
